Newfound Freedom is Richard Modlin’s well-crafted, historically accurate, epic tome that will thrill readers interested in the genre of American colonial and nautical adventure. It’s a coming-of-age, plot-driven novel filled with camaraderie that’s comparable to the works of Patrick O'Brien. Survival, adaptation, and self-reliance are the dominant themes as two English brothers experience a perilous Atlantic crossing and unexpectedly become embroiled in the beginnings of the American Revolution. Newfound Freedom finds some of its best moments via the ideological turmoil between main characters, Jack and Ian Hollister, yet the treasures to be found in its pages are almost without limits as the author brandishes his skills as a world-class writer and historian. Modlin served as a senior research associate with the Smithsonian Institute's National Museum of Natural History. Modlin’s inspiration for the novel found its genesis in the author’s love of history and an extended stay along the east coast in the vicinity of Machias, ME. There he learned of the Battle of Machias, which was the first naval battle of the American Revolution. After visiting the site of the battle and researching the events, people, and culture of late eighteenth century Machias, Newfound Freedom became not only possible, but also an actuality as a thrilling work of high adventure. Indeed, using his superb writing skills, Modlin keeps the reader intimately engaged with the history of the time. In creating the dialogue, the author used only words and expressions that were common lexis in New England, Great Britain, and on the high seas during that epoch in time. The descriptions of the landmarks, events, terrain, and activities are also true to the time. Moreover, the fictional characters in Newfound Freedom interact with actual historical figures such as George Washington, Jeremiah O'Brien, Nathan Hale, Ichabod Jones, and many others.

I am an enthusiastic reader of adventure books that include historical aspects such as dates and persons of note during the period about which the book is written. Newfound Freedom is richly endowed with both. Set in the early days of the American Revolutionary War, the book is a page turner, with suspenseful scenes played out in terms of human frailty as well as human courage. The characters, some of a compassionate nature and others full of villainy, are strong. Modlin has done his research as he presents little known facts about American history. For instance where was the American Navy in 1775? And, where was the first naval battle of the American Revolution fought? Modlin skillfully reveals the answers through the interactions of his fictitious characters with the actual events and people. There was no American Navy in the beginning of that war and the first sea battle was fought on a river near the village of Machias, Maine. The first "battleship" was a sloop of war, the HMS Margaretta, which a group of rebels captured from the British.Modlin has carefully researched the history of events leading up to the battle. He skillfully weaves the story, complete with a description of the dress and a narrative written in the language of that day, so that the early history comes alive through the experiences of two British brothers, one loyal to the Crown and the other a true rebel.

I just finished your book "Newfound Freedom." That was a great read! The story was unique and kept my interest throughout. I am an avid reader of historical fiction & non fiction so your extensive use of historically accurate terminology to tell this tale is greatly respected. It truly made the reader feel as if they were actually there with your characters by the mental images generated. Briefly, nice job and I'm already looking forward to your next book.
Interesting account of American Revolution in the Northeast. My roots are in Washington County, so my purpose was to catch glimpses of ancestors, especially in Machias!
Richard Modlin's Newfound Freedom is written in crisp concrete language devoid of ambiguous abstraction. The adventure aspect of the narrative is pulling me through it like a surfboard. I think of Robert Luis Stevenson and James Fennimore Cooper but without the boring slow-paced language of these 19th century adventure novelists. I am thoroughly enjoying Newfound Freedom on my .
