3.5 stars

When a stolen diamond necklace made an appearance in her deceased Uncle Barry's belongings, aspiring artist, Miss Zoie Barron, was determined to return it to its rightful owner. But trying to return it the original source proved a little more difficult.

Lord Weylin thought his neighbor was, at minimum, a thief, or possibly a golddigger. Nothing could be further than the truth. And Zoie told him.

I couldn't help but think of some of those old black and white mysteries with a comical subplot where the husband means well by keeping things from his wife. But she is not only aware that something is wrong, she is one step ahead pursuing the matter. Yes, Weylin and Zoie clash at the beginning but before long his lordship realizes having her around is not half bad. In fact, it is more than nice.

Ms. Smith's love for animals, the offbeat humor and a morsel of mystery make this an engaging historical romance.

Gather Ye Rosebuds edition by Joan Smith Romance eBooks Reviews

I read all of Joan Smith's books years ago. Now, scrounging for more Regencies (publishers, take note, we need more) I remembered Joan's books and decided to read them again. Nor was I disappointed. This book is just as enjoyable as I remembered. Joan's forte is her sense of humor. The interactions of the hero and heroine and their repartee are very amusing. In addition, the plot is not just a rehash of tired plots, but is refreshingly original. Joan's books are not long and are not slowed down by boring sex scenes. Courting couples in this period did not jump in bed at the drop of a hat, so Joan's books are much more authentic in the regard than books written by current authors.

If you're looking for a really fun, light Regency, this is the place to come.
Zoie a young woman on the brink of spinsterhood from a well to do country family has decided her love of painting is a good substitute for love. While cleaning out her deceased Uncles bedroom she discovers a diamond necklace that was reported stolen years ago. How her uncle gained possession of the necklace and how she would return it to it's rightful owner and find love along the way is the heart of this story.

All the players are in place for what should have been a delightful little Regency romp but instead surprisingly turned into a very boring read. Top-lofty Lord Weylin, his mother the typical over feed and over indulged Lady of the manor more concerned about her pug dog than the average person. Zoie the sensible daughter and protector of her gentle mother, a mother that refused to deal with any unpleasant situations. And the servants, an Irish drama queen housekeeper and a thieving scoundrel of a butler. I absolutely adore Joan Smith RR's but this book is not an example of her excellent writing ability. The mystery regarding the necklace became drawn out and bogged down with the side story of Zoie's Uncle Barry and Weylin's Aunt Margaret. There was a lot of blind leading the blind in solving what I considered a weak scenario. The witty and snappy banter between Zoie and Weylin was a bit flat, and granted there are only 204 pages there was no gradual build up to Z and W falling in love. They share one kiss in the garden and BAM! love is in the air when up to that point they acted as if they did not trust or like each other. There were brief moments of JS signature humor when Weylin thought Zoie was trying to steal one of his Ming vases and the housekeeper provided hilarious moments, but that was not enough to lift this book up from an ok read to a great read.
Lady Barron and her artistic daughter, Zoie, live modestly on the mother's widows pension. Near them lives the fabulously wealthy Lord Weylin. Zoie's uncle, who lived with them since he retired from the East India Company, has recently died and Zoie wants his room for her art studio. As she is removing her uncle's effects, Zoie discovers a diamond necklace her mother recognizes as having belonged to Lord Weyland's deceased aunt. When Zoie tries to return it to Lord Weyland's house secretly (to avoid having to tell that it had been in her uncle's possesson), she is accused of theft by the haughty Lord Weyland. Since the necklace turns out to be a fake after all , both Zoie and Weyland seek to solve the mystery of the real necklace(still missing) and what relationship there was between her uncle and his aunt. They don't trust each other and each tries to hide discovered evidence from the other. Can a romance possibly blossom between two suspicious people who don't even like each other?
